Journal · Mommy Makeover

It’s one of the most personal questions we get. Here’s how we think about mommy makeover timing, without pushing you either way.
This question usually comes out a little quietly, sometimes near the end of a consult, like people almost feel silly asking it.
“Should I wait until I’m done having kids?”
It’s not silly at all. It’s one of the most important questions you can ask. So let’s talk about it openly.
Why this question matters so much
A mommy makeover often addresses areas affected by pregnancy: the belly, the abdominal muscles, the breasts, and stubborn fat. A future pregnancy can change those same areas again.
So the concern is simple. If you have another baby later, some of the changes you were happy with could shift. That’s why surgeons generally want to know your family plans before recommending anything.
“But I don’t know if I’m done”
Totally normal. A lot of people are somewhere in the middle. Maybe you’re leaning toward done, but not 100% sure. Maybe your partner feels differently. Maybe life just hasn’t decided yet.
Be honest about the uncertainty. “I’m not sure” is a completely valid answer at a consult, and it actually helps Dr. Clerveus give you better advice.
Things you might talk through
Here’s what often comes up in this conversation:
- How sure are you about future pregnancies? No need for a final answer, just honesty.
- Which areas bother you most right now? Some concerns may be more affected by future pregnancy than others.
- Would a smaller step make sense for now? Sometimes people ask about addressing one area and waiting on others.
- How would you feel if something changed after another pregnancy? It’s worth thinking about emotionally, too.
What about breastfeeding?
Another common timing question. Breast changes after nursing are a big part of why many moms ask about a mommy makeover. Ask your surgeon how breastfeeding status affects timing for you. This is very individual, so we’re not going to give a blanket answer here.
What about weight?
Many people ask, “Should I reach my goal weight first?” Bring this up at your consult too. Your surgeon may want to discuss whether your weight is stable and what that means for your plan. Our mommy makeover in Wellington page covers more of the general basics.
The “I’ll do it when the kids are older” plan
Some moms decide to wait until their kids are a bit more independent, simply for practical reasons. Lifting a toddler during recovery is a real challenge. School-age kids can be easier to plan around. That’s a lifestyle choice, not a medical one, and it’s totally valid.
Questions to bring
- How might a future pregnancy affect the results of what you’re recommending?
- Is there anything you’d suggest waiting on, and why?
- How does breastfeeding affect timing for me?
- Does my weight need to be stable first?
- If I’m unsure about more kids, what are my options?
The procedures themselves
A mommy makeover here may include a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast procedures, depending on your goals and the surgeon’s recommendation. You can read about how Lipo 360 and a tummy tuck can be combined, too.
No pressure, ever
We’re not here to rush you. If the right answer is “wait,” we’ll tell you. If the right answer is “it’s reasonable now,” we’ll explain why. And if you want to come back in a year, the door’s open.
Results vary from person to person, and timing is one of many factors. That’s why the best answer is a personal one.
The easiest next step
