Tummy Tuck in Wellington — When Loose Skin or Abdominal Muscles Are the Real Issue

Liposuction removes fat. It does not remove loose skin or repair stretched abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) addresses those structural changes — commonly after pregnancy or significant weight loss — in exchange for a longer recovery and a permanent, carefully placed scar. Results vary.

Board-Certified General Surgeon Ā· Body contouring — not weight loss

  • Skin + muscle + fat assessed together
  • Full, mini & combined options discussed honestly
  • Scar planned with your clothing in mind
  • Often paired with Lipo 360 for the sides

The procedure

What a tummy tuck does

Exact steps depend on your exam. Not every patient needs muscle repair or a navel change.

Removes excess skin

Loose lower-abdominal skin — often with stretch marks below the navel — is removed and the remaining skin is redraped.

Repairs the muscle wall

When the abdominal muscles have separated (diastasis), they can be brought back toward the midline with sutures, when indicated.

Reshapes the navel

In a full tummy tuck the navel stays attached but is brought out through a new opening in the redraped skin.

Refines with liposuction

Liposuction of the flanks — and sometimes limited areas of the abdomen — may be included to blend the waistline.

Candidacy honesty

Who tends to be a fit

Often discussed when you

  • Have loose or overhanging lower-abdominal skin that exercise can’t change
  • Notice a midline bulge or ā€˜pooch’ from separated muscles after pregnancy
  • Are at or near a stable weight you can maintain
  • Are finished having children, or understand pregnancy can undo the repair
  • Don’t use nicotine, or can stop completely for a period your surgeon will explain

Usually advised to wait or reconsider when

  • Significant weight loss is still in progress
  • Pregnancy is planned in the near future
  • Medical conditions aren’t well controlled
  • Fat — not skin or muscle — is the main concern (see Lipo 360)
  • Scar placement or recovery time isn’t acceptable

Options

Types of abdominoplasty we may discuss

Depending on your exam, the discussion may cover a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck for limited changes below the navel, or Lipo 360 + tummy tuck when fat on the sides and back is also a concern. Your surgeon will explain which one, if any, fits your case.

The trade-off

Talking honestly about the scar

How we plan it

  • Marked while you stand, with your preferred underwear or swimwear style in mind
  • Placed as low as anatomy allows
  • Scar care instructions per your written instructions

What to expect

  • The scar is permanent; it typically fades and flattens over 12+ months
  • Healing varies with genetics, skin type, and sun exposure
  • Smoking and tension can widen or delay healing
  • A small revision is sometimes needed — discussed up front

Recovery

A longer recovery than liposuction alone

First days

Walking slightly bent at the waist to protect the repair. Compression binder. Drains if used. An adult with you at home.

First 1–2 weeks

Gradual straightening; short walks; no lifting beyond the weight limit in your instructions. Desk work often on a timeline your surgeon will advise when cleared.

Weeks 3–6

Increasing activity on Michael Clerveus, MD’s schedule. No core training until cleared.

Months 3–12

Swelling resolves and the scar matures. Results vary.

Safety

Risks to understand

Fluid collection (seroma)

May need drainage in clinic; drains or quilting sutures may be used to lower risk.

Wound-healing problems

Higher in nicotine users and with some medical conditions.

Blood clots

Prevention plan per your written plan; walking early matters.

Scar & contour issues

Widened scar, dog-ears at the ends, or asymmetry may need refinement.

Numbness

Lower-abdominal numbness is common and often improves over months.

Anesthesia risks

Reviewed with the anesthesia professional named in your written plan. See facility & safety.

FAQ

Tummy tuck questions

Tummy tuck or liposuction — which do I need?

If pinching shows mostly fat and your skin snaps back, liposuction or Lipo 360 may fit. If skin hangs or muscles bulge, a tummy tuck is usually the discussion. Many patients need both. Full comparison →

Will a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?

Stretch marks on the skin that’s removed — usually below the navel — go with it. Marks above that line may move lower but remain.

Can I have children after a tummy tuck?

Yes, but pregnancy can stretch the skin and muscle again. Most surgeons suggest waiting until you’re finished having children.

How much does a tummy tuck cost in Wellington?

It depends on the type, whether liposuction is added, anesthesia, and facility. We provide a written quote after your exam. See cost factors and financing.

Does insurance cover a tummy tuck?

Cosmetic abdominoplasty generally isn’t covered. Coverage questions are answered at your consultation.

When will I see my final result?

Shape improves quickly, but swelling and scar maturation continue for months. Results vary.
